(Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology) As millions of Americans gear up for the Thanksgiving holiday, a new report published online in the FASEB Journal, may provide some relief for those leery second helpings. Researchers describe a discovery that may allow some obese people avoid common obesity-related metabolic problems without losing weight: they make a common antioxidant, melanin, in excess. Even more promising is that some of the antioxidant drugs that can mimic the melanin effect are FDA-approved and available.

- Molecular mechanism of anaphylactic shock decoded (0)
(University Hospital Heidelberg) Researchers at Heidelberg University have found a molecular mechanism for anaphylactic shock. The activation of specific proteins in the cell walls of small blood vessels plays an important role. Suppressing the respective genes protects mice from the potentially fatal reactions of the immune and circulatory systems (anaphylactic shock) without disrupting circulatory regulation. [...]
- Combining targeted therapy drugs may treat previously resistant tumors (0)
(Massachusetts General Hospital) A team of cancer researchers from several Boston academic medical centers has discovered a potential treatment for a group of tumors that have resisted previous targeted therapy approaches. In their Nature Medicine report, receiving early online release, the investigators report that combining two different kinase inhibitors -- drugs that interfere with [...]
- A new gene silencing platform — silence is golden (0)
(Rutgers University) Researchers led by Rutgers' Samuel Gunderson has developed a novel gene silencing platform with very significant improvements over existing RNAi approaches. This may enable the development and discovery of a new class of drugs to treat a wide array of diseases. Critical to the technology is the approach this team took to specifically [...]
- 3-substituted indolones as novel therapeutic compounds for neurodegenerative conditions (0)
(Society for Experimental Biology and Medicine) Neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, and ALS affect millions of individuals every year. Current medications are modestly effective, at best, and only target the symptoms associated with these debilitating and fatal disorders. Drugs to prevent or slow down the death of neurons are urgently [...]
- ‘Fly guy’ makes memory breakthrough (0)
(University of Alberta Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry) University of Alberta pediatric neuroscientist Dr. Francois Bolduc has shown that genetically disrupting a specific gene in a fruit fly's brain will wipe out its long-term memory. Bolduc has also found a class of drugs that helps fruit flies with this disrupted gene to regain their [...]
